Bob Arum is looking to secure a fight for rising French super middleweight, Christian Mbilli against unified super middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez in the near future.

Mbilli, who is co-promoted by Arum’s Top Rank, is the number one contender to Canelo’s WBC crown and is rated at no lower than three in the remaining governing bodies.

The 29-year-old puts his WBC Continental Americas title on the line in arguably the toughest test of his career thus far when he faces former three-time middleweight world title challenger, Sergiy Derevyanchenko in Quebec City on Saturday.

Hall of Fame promoter, Arum says his company, will do all they can to secure a showdown with Alvarez, providing he overcomes the Ukrainian.

“Mbilli really fits very much in our plans,” the 92-year-old told Maestro A.

“What is the game plan?

“Well he’s got to fight top level fighters.

“This fight, maybe one more and then we’ll do whatever we can to match him with Canelo Alvarez.

“Canelo’s really a terrific fighter, but Christian is coming up and I think that will be a major, major event when we get that fight made.”

Four-weight world champion, Alvarez defends his WBA ‘super’, WBC and WBO belts against Edgar Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 14.

The 34-year-old lost his undisputed status after the IBF stripped him of their belt after he refused to to defend it against little known Cuban, William Scull.

Arum, who promoted a large part of Berlanga’s career before he signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, feels the 27-year-old will put on a better showing than many are expecting.

“He is talented and he is very determined to win the fight,” Arum added.

“So I think the fight will be a lot better than some of the critics have said.

“I don’t know if Berlanga can beat Canelo, but I know for sure he’s going to give him a hell of a fight.”
