An undisputed super featherweight title clash at Lux Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, ended in disappointment, as Alycia Baumgardner and Delfine Persoon fought to a no-contest in their meeting.
Baumgardner (15-1, KO4) completed the full set of belts by taking the WBC title with a wide points win against Elhem Mekhaled last February, but after outscoring Christina Linardatou last July, the champion failing a drug test a month later. Persoon (49-3, KO19) arrived to this contest best-known for pushing Katie Taylor to the limit in 2019, dropping a majority verdict in New York, and she lost by only two points in the rematch on two cards just over a year later to the Irishwoman. She was on a run of five straight wins against lower-key opposition.
Baumgardner started strongly, working well off her jab, and she scored a first round knockdown, as a left hook forced the challenger’s glove to touch the canvas. The second saw more dominance, with Baumgardner hammering away in flurries, and rocking Persoon while she was on the ropes. The champion’s timing was beating the Belgian’s pressure, but with Baumgardner going to throw a right hand and Persoon on the counter in round four, the two clashed heads, and Persoon came off much the worse, with the cut to her face ruling her out of action on the doctor’s advice.
