David Benavidez has reignited the war of words between himself and long-time rival, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Though a fight between them has not materialised as of yet, Benavidez and Canelo have launched numerous verbal assaults at one and other, mainly when the former campaigned at super middleweight.

After ‘The Mexican Monster’ moved up to light heavyweight, things went quiet for a while between the pair – however that has just changed.

There are many in the sport who believe Alvarez has been ducking a fight against his younger, bigger adversary, despite the fact it is perhaps the most financially lucrative for him.

And when Benavidez appeared on The Miami Hustle this week, he launched an X-rated tirade against the four-weight world champion.

“To be honest with you, I think Canelo is a f***ing pu***! That’s just my opinion.

“If we ever fight, the man is making well over $100 million.

“He’s saying that I don’t have anything to offer, that I’m a nobody and I need more experience.

“But if you’re going to make $100 million fighting somebody that has no experience and all the s*** they’ve been talking about me, why would you not come beat my a** and collect the big bag?

“I’m not scared of nobody! I embrace the challenges. So for Canelo and his fans saying I don’t bring anything to the table – they’re all scared, just like how he’s scared.

“If he wants to prove that I ain’t s***, then come prove it front of everybody. It’s that easy.”

Unfortunately for Benavidez, a fight against Alvarez looks destined never to materialise as the Guadalajara man enters the twilight of his career.

Unified super middleweight champion ‘Canelo’ has not boxed since his September win over Edgar Berlanga, though reports suggest he has agreed terms for a blockbuster clash against pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in September.

As for Benavidez, he faces the toughest test of his career on February 1, when he takes on Cuban amateur standout David Morrell Jr for the WBA ‘regular’ and WBC interim light heavyweight world titles.
