David Benavidez has revealed how he would go about defeating pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford if they were to ever lock horns.
Crawford has been linked to a fight with Benavidez rival, Canelo Alvarez, with a deal for the pair to square off in September reportedly nearing completion.
‘Bud,’ who was most recently in action at super welterweight, will have to jump up two weight divisions to take on the unified super middleweight champion, and would be a considerable underdog in the eyes of most observers.
The Nebraska man would be even more physically handicapped if he was to ever fight Benavidez, who stands at 6’3 tall and now campaigns at light heavyweight.
And ‘The Mexican Monster’ told media this week that he would make full use of those advantages if he was to ever find himself in the ring with Crawford.
“To be honest with you, if I fought Terence Crawford, I would definitely use my size, my reach to my advantage.
“Crawford is a very smart fighter, but I guess thankfully I’m not fighting him.”
Benavidez was speaking ahead of his fight with David Morrell Jr this Saturday night, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The 28-year-old took a good scalp in his inaugural fight at 175lbs last June, when he defeated Ukrainian former world champion, Oleksandr Gvozdyk via unanimous decision.
Should he get past Morrell, he has said he intends to become undisputed champion at light heavyweight, in the hope that that will be enough to finally tempt Alvarez into a long overdue grudge match.
There is a widespread view in boxing that Alvarez has been ducking a fight against his younger, bigger adversary, despite the fact it is perhaps the most financially lucrative out there for him.
That said, Benavidez will need to have his full focus on Cuba’s former standout amateur Morrell this weekend, who many pundits believe will be the toughest test of his career thus far.
Canelo is set to fight on May 3, with his trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso confirming this week that IBF champion, William Scull and Christian Mbilli are in contention for a showdown with his charge.
