Former world champion, David Benavidez has shed light on who he’ll be fighting next.

Benavidez has became one of the biggest stars in the sport over the past few years, and fans have been clamouring for a showdown between him and Canelo Alvarez.

Unfortunately for the boxing world, unified super middleweight titlist, Alvarez appears unwilling to step into the ring with ‘The Mexican Monster’ who has decided to move up to light heavyweight in pursuit of big fights.

Amongst the most enticing of those match-ups is one with talented Cuban David Morrell, who made his 175lbs debut back in July.

There was excitement  on Wednesday after Benavidez claimed on social media that a clash with Morrell could be next.

“Cooking up something big for y’all for my next fight. Stay tuned. If everything goes right and he accepts, I’m fighting Morrell next.”

However, fans were left disappointed today when the 27-year-old stated that talks had broken down and he will be fighting Jesse Hart next – not Morrell.

“I will be fighting Jesse Hart next, not Morrell. But Morrell is a future opponent.”

Though Hart is a two-time world title challenger, he was most effective as a super middleweight and, at 35, his best days are likely to be well behind him.

‘Hard Work’ has scored five wins on the bounce since a split decision loss to Joe Smith Jr back in 2020, though these have come at a low level and Benavidez represents a mammoth step-up.

The Phoenix-born pressure fighter will be a wide favourite against Hart and will look to kick on from his wide decision victory against former light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk back in April.

However, he will likely share fans frustrations that he will have to wait until at least 2025 to secure the mega fight that has long escaped him.

There has been no official announcement for Benavidez vs Hart, but it is expected to land in December.
