In the latest edition of the boxing rumor mill, we’ll be talking about a few recent fight announcements which have served to liven up the year-end schedule for the Sweet Science. From an intriguing clash of styles in a high risk fight, to exciting rematches which we have been waiting years for, here’s a look at the new slate of fights which has been announced.
Robert Guerero vs. Andre Berto
Robert Guerrero will put his interim WBC welterweight title up for grabs against Andre Berto on November 24th in Ontario, California, in an HBO-televised clash from the Citizen’s Business Bank Arena.
Guerrero is looking to further stake his claim at 147 pounds, and score yet another career best victory. Berto, meanwhile, is coming back from his steroids snafu and wants to clear his name, and get moving in the right direction once again. Neither man has faced a challenge quite like the other, so a lot of questions will be answered with this contest.
Guerrero vs. Berto is an exciting clash, and the winner will be one of the key players in the division moving ahead. We currently have Guerrero and Berto ranked number 5 and 10, respectively, in our welterweight division rankings.
Tomasz Adamek vs. Steve Cunningham II
In a rematch four years in the making, Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham will clash as the headline event of a December NBC card. Both are now campaigning as heavyweights, and are eager to work themselves into title contention. The winner will do just that, and the fight has great potential for fireworks.
The first match was fought at cruiserweight, during Cunningham’s title reign in that division. USS Cunningham displayed great boxing skills throughout the night, but his chin betrayed him a few times as Adamek scored multiple knockdowns which ended up swaying the scorecards in his direction.
Now, Adamek is the more seasoned heavyweight, but perhaps also the more weary fighter. Cunningham brings his same great athleticism and speed to the table to go up against Tomasz’s power and will to win, and the rematch should just as excellent as the first bout was.
Geale vs. Mundine II
In a less anticipated rematch – in the United States, although certainly not in Australia – Daniel Geale will put his IBF middleweight title on the line against Anthony Mundine. Mundine handed Geale the sole loss of his career back in 2009, although it’s disputed decision, and one which Geale and his team vehemently believe that he deserved to win.
The trash talk has already been heated between the two sides, with Geale vowing to end Mundine’s career and win in dominant fashion.
Geale is currently ranked as the number 2 middleweight in the world in our current middleweight division rankings. He’ll need to retain those titles in impressive fashion to land the kind of big money fight in the United States that he has been seeking.
