The official Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Timothy Bradley weigh-ins were held this afternoon in Las Vegas, Nevada, in advance of their HBO Pay-Per-View showdown on Saturday night. Analysis:
Both Marquez and Bradley appeared to be in excellent shape. Marquez looks like he did against Pacquiao last year–more muscular and ripped than he used to be. Bradley is in his usual cut and muscular condition, looking like a mini-bodybuilder. There were no hi-jinx at the weigh-in, just a tense staredown as is the custom. This weigh-in featured little suspense, with both guys probably able to still make 140. Marquez, at 144.5, has a good pound of that in his gold chain.
Marquez is a -140 favorite, with Bradley going off at +120. Bradley is the one with the most to prove in this fight, with this moment serving as proof as to whether or not he’s a boxing superstar. Marquez, 40, is looking to show he still has some life in his career, while winning a belt in another weight class.
Strategically, this fight should be interesting, Bradley, despite how much he may want to box or how good of an idea it may be, always seems to end up mixing it up. That could play into the hands of the master counter-puncher Marquez. And even if Bradley takes the prudent approach and comes into the ring committed to box and move, Marquez has a way of making guys fight his fight. On top of all that is the looming question of whether or not Bradley is the force of a few years ago.
Interesting odds on the Salido-Cruz fight, with Salido a robust -465 favorite with Cruz going off at +330. Cruz has looked good in recent outings, while Saildo looked exceptionally ragged against Mikey Garcia. Still, Salido is thought to be on a higher level, hence him being a favorite. Cruz is very unproven at this level, yet is not a bad underdog selection, being that Salido may be heading downhill a bit. this fight also has some historical ramifications, with Cruz looking to become boxing’s first openly gay world champion. He will be clad in rainbow garb for tomorrow’s bout.
