Yesterday at the official weigh-ins for tonight’s HBO PPV card, Brandon Rios failed to make the lightweight limit. The Rios vs. Abril fight will still go on, however, Rios can’t win the title which is at stake. He has said this will be his last fight at lightweight. Also, right here you can view the official weigh-in results for the Mike Alvarado vs. Mauricio Herrera fight. Take a look.
- Juan Manuel Marquez: 140 lbs
- Sergey Fedchenko: 138.5 lbs
This fight headlines the PPV card, but is held at a second site, in Mexico City. It’s for the interim WBO junior welterweight title.
- Brandon Rios: 137 lbs
- Richard Abril: 135 lbs
A completely gaunt Brandon Rios was unable to make weight for his lightweight match against Richard Abril. Of course, this isn’t the first time he has done this, and one had to wonder why he tried to take another lightweight fight to begin with. The title will only be at stake for Abril in the bout, and in addition, Rios will be ineligible to win the $50,000 bonus that Top Rank is handing out to the winner of the fight.
- Mike Alvarado: 140 lbs
- Mauricio Herrera: 140 lbs
Both men made an even 140 lbs for this intriguing junior welterweight showdown, as Alvarado looks to move into title contention and Herrera looks to unseat another top prospect.
- Mercito Gesta: 137lbs
- Oscar Cuero: 138 lbs
Gesta is a highly touted, undefeated lightweight prospect. He’s in against a very overmatched opponent here, but will be looking to make a statement win on this showcase to help boost his case.
Weigh-in Videos
So, the Rios vs. Abril weigh-in results have to be disappointing for Bam Bam and his team, but from an outside perspective, it’s not exactly surprising, and the decision to take the fight at 135 lbs – or for Top Rank to put it together – is questionable at best.
