Talk about a boxing fan’s dream! For the upcoming Brick City Boxing Series show at the AmeriHealth Pavilion at Newark’s Prudential Center on Friday, May 20th, Main Events matchmakers Russell Peltz and Jolene Mizzone have put together a card sure to please boxing enthusiasts. A surprising number of those scheduled to fight on next Friday’s undercard have come in as underdogs and upset previously undefeated fighters. Will history repeat itself on May 20th?
Brooklyn’s Sadam Ali, 12-0, 7 KO’s, returns to Prudential Center. The former Olympic standout has garnered professional respect and trepidation, so much so that the matchmakers have had a difficult time getting opponents to agree to fight him. On May 20th Ali is taking on John Revish from Baton Rouge, LA, 9-3-2,8KO’s, in an 8 round welterweight bout. Revish has never been stopped and unlike most of Ali’s past opponents, called to ask for this fight.
Jose “Mangu” Peralta of Jersey City, NJ, 6-1, 4 KO’s, is best known for his victorious upset against previously unbeaten Christian Martinez. In this 6 round junior welterweight match “Mangu” will take on Bryan Abraham of Schenectady, NY, 3-6-2, 3 KO’s. This year Abraham had a big upset against Dominic DeSanto who was 5-0 at the time, by stopping him in the first round.
In his third appearance at “The Rock” Tyrone Luckey, 3-0, 3KO’s, of Middletown, NJ, hopes to keep his winning streak intact as he takes on Sidell Blocker, of Hamilton, NJ, 1-4-1. Blocker has other plans for the 4 round lightweight battle however. Blocker intends to employ the same skills he called upon when he upset undefeated Deano Burell, who had over 200 amateur fights.
Local crowd favorite, Vinny O’Brien of East Hanover, NJ, 2-0, 2KO’s, knows how to put on a show, and his numerous boxing fans know how to boisterously cheer him on. The arena gets loud when O’Brien is in the ring. His opponent Rafael Montalvo of Philadelphia, PA, promises he will bring it on “Philly style” to perhaps score an upset of his own in this welterweight 4 rounder.
Newark’s own, Angel Concepcion, 4-0, returns to his hometown Prudential Center to take on his toughest opponent to date. Philadelphia ‘s Teneal Goyco, 4-1, 2 KO’s, is coming off a win over previously unbeaten prospect Dennis Morris and intends to spoil Concepcion’s unblemished record.
Also slated to be on this exciting undercard is Bronx, NY favorite, Joel Castillo, 8-0, 5KO’s, opponent TBA.
In the main event Joel Julio of Monteria, Colombia, 36-4, 31KOs, will take on Anges Adjaho, of Cotonou, Benin (Africa), 17-5, 9KO’s, in a 10 round welterweight bout. For Julio this fight is particularly important because it will be his first test back at the 147 weight class.
Held in the intimate boxing club atmosphere of Prudential Center’s AmeriHealth Pavilion in Newark, NJ, the fight will be broadcast on ESPN2, 9-11pm ET. The Brick City Boxing Series is promoted by Main Events.
