Super Featherweight contender, Adrien “The Problem” Broner (21-0, 17KO’s) is scheduled to fight on HBO on November 26th, in his hometown of Cincinnati. But there is a problem. Broner, whose nickname, coincidently is “The Problem”, is still searching for an opponent after the original one, WBO Champion Ricky Burns, chose to instead face Michael Katsidis, and in the process vacating his title. Golden Boy Promotions, Broner’s promoter, is hoping to make the fight on the 26th for the vacant WBO title.
Fellow top-rated Super Featherweight contender, and recent world-title challenger, Argenis Mendez (18-2, 9KO’s) believes he has the answer to “The Problem”. Pick him.
The DiBella Entertainment promoted Mendez (IBF #1) is coming off a very entertaining, but highly controversial decision loss to Juan Carlos Salgado last weekend in Mexico. The bout was for the vacant IBF Super Featherweight Championship. Mendez was hoping to get an immediate rematch against Salgado, but a world title opportunity on HBO would be just as good.
“Mendez should be the IBF champion right now. He lost a close decision, due to hometown advantage. If Adrien Broner wants to be a champion, he has to fight top quality opposition. If Ricky Burns is stripped due to his unwillingness to fight, Broner and Mendez is a perfect championship match to replace,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment.
