Bundrage vs. Spinks II Results
Last night in the main event of a special Saturday evening Shobox, from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, CA, Cornelius Bundrage repeated his first performance over Cory Spinks, this time scoring a decisive 7th round TKO win against the former two-division titleholder. The official time of the stoppage was 2:32 of the 7th round.
Two years ago, in their first meeting, Bundrage got the job done even sooner, in the 5th. But the fight played out essentially in the same way. Spinks doesn’t have any of the movement or slickness he used to have. In fact, he was a wide open target for Bundrage’s looping overhand rights, as well as big, thudding shots to the body.
It was basically just a matter of time until Bundrage wore him down and got the stoppage. He started early though, scoring a quick knockdown in the opening session, before Spinks and his legs had had enough in the 7th.
In earlier action, Erislandy Lara put forth a strong showing against Freddy Hernandez in another junior middleweight bout. Lara was the quicker, crisper fighter, and bloodied up Hernandez pretty badly en route to a wide UD win.
Now the question remains, which of these two guys, if either, will get a chance to meet Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September?
For Lara, he may as well start looking for somebody else to fight. He doesn’t have a title belt around his waist, and he has the style and skills to give Canelo major trouble. In other words, there’s no chance that Golden Boy is putting the two of them in the ring together for the time being.
Bundrage may indeed get his shot against Alvarez. As opposed to Lara, he does have a title strap. In addition, his style would be fairly tailor-made for Canelo, who would have the speed, size and overall package to easily flummox the gritty, but predictable and unspectacular, Bundrage.
Personally, I still want to see Canelo vs. Miguel Cotto, but that seems to be yet another pipe dream. Right now, of everyone available, I’d consider Bundrage the leading contender to land the September showdown against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
