Erik Morales Returns this Saturday, now Fighting at Welterweight
Erik “El Terrible “Morales (48-6, 34 Kos) headlines “The Champion Returns” PPV this coming Saturday March 27 against Jose “Jicaras” Alfaro (23-5, 20 KOs) in Monterrey, Mexico, the latest comeback fight for the 3-Division World Champion.
Morales at age 33 has been retired for the past 2 1/2 years and was remembered to be the last man to defeat the current pound for pound best Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao. Unfortunately for Morales it was also the last win of his career before retiring in 2007 following his defeat at the hands of former WBC Lightweight champion David “Dangerous” Diaz.
Coming back after such a long absence, this would be a very difficult task for any fighter and particularly one such as Morales who has been through so many wars with so many of the best boxers of his generation. He fought fighters like Junior Jones, Guty Espadas, Paulie Ayala, Wayne McCullough, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Manny Pacquiao. He even wanted another crack at the Pacman.
“I know what I want to accomplish in boxing and I want to fight, it’s not for money because I am well financially, it’s because I really wanted to do it” he told a Mexican newspaper. “I want to win that fourth title in different weight classes and be the first Mexican to do it. Boxing is my life and I feel very happy.” Morales added.
Morales has high hopes and is expecting to win big to cement his legacy and this coming Saturday, we’ll have to see for ourselves. Alfaro however, is no pushover with a good record of (23-5, 20 KOs). The fight will be at the welterweight limit of 147 pounds, marking the first time Morales has ever competed above lightweight, after only a brief late-career stint there.
A 12- round co-feature, former two-time WBA light heavyweight champion Hugo Hernan “Pigu” Garay ( 32-4,17 KOs), rated No.3 by the WBA, faces WBA No.4 rated Chris “Hard Hittin” Henry (24-2,19 KOs) in the WBA light Heavyweight Eliminator.
