Rd 1: Trout begins the fight immediately by establishing his jab. Canelo has hardly thrown a punch a minute into the bout. Trout just jabbing and jabbing.  Canelo finally comes forward and the crowd erupts. But Trout the only man really doing anything this round. Action picks up in the last 30 seconds. Canelo bulls forward and gets Trout on the ropes. Round to Trout.

Rd 2: Canelo changes the pace from the first and becomes more aggressive. Looking for a home for his left hook. Canelo much more effective here. He’s the one leading the pace here, getting off first and cutting off the ring. Round to Canelo.

Rd 3: Trout trying to reestablish his jab at the start of the round. Canelo leads, Trout answers with a 1-2. Trout looking to get more into the fight. Canelo charges but gets pushed aside. Canelo throws a 1-2 now, gets Trout to the ropes, he swirls away. They trade jabs and counters. Round probably to Canelo, but very close.

Rd 4: Fight getting into more of a rhythm of Canelo coming forward and dictating. Trout not using his jab as much, Canelo getting off first in many cases. But it’s real close in most of the exchanges in terms of who’s getting the better of who. Now Trout’s coming forward, he starts going to the body, throwing combinations. Canelo quieter right now. Canelo lands a stiff, snapping jab that’s the best punch of the fight, but I think Trout did enough to control the round that he still wins it.

Rd 5: Canelo adding a bit more fire to his shots right now. Looking to sting Trout. Trout going back to his jab. Canelo lands a good body-head combination. Trout’s jabs mostly coming up short. But right now keeping Canelo out. Trout’s jab working better now. Trout has reasserted himself. After a strong start to the round by Canelo, Trout really the only one doing anything later on. So it’s another close round, but this one to Trout.

Rd 6: Each man kicking things up a bit at the start of Round 6, throwing shots with bad intentions. Big exchanges now. Canelo throwing big, wild shots. Trout looking to counter them. Trout now tries to slow things down, go back to the jab. Now Trout has Canelo on the ropes and is opening up. Canelo fires back and moves back to ring center. Another very, very close round. Canelo leads with a nice right. Trout going to the body. Canelo lands a right uppercut that stings him, and that could potentially take the round for him. We’ll give it to Trout though.

Rd 7: Canelo lands a straight right as part of a 1-2, and just like that, Trout wobbles and goes down. He’s hurt. First time he’s ever down. Canelo pressing. But now Trout landing big shots in return. Good action both ways. Trout is longer, and when he dictates, he’s more effective. Canelo lands an uppercut and Trout wobbles a bit, still on shaky legs. Trout has recovered nicely here. Trout does a great job getting back into things, but you still gotta give Canelo a 10-8 here. It’s 66-66 through 7.

Rd 8: Trout dictating to start the round. Canelo looking to pick and choose his spots. Trout actually has Canelo on the ropes here, and he’s opening up. Not doing a ton of damage, but he’s more effective here. Canelo has just slowed down, maybe tired himself out in round 7 after hurting Trout. All Trout here in round 8. Very nice round for him here.

Rd 9: Canelo getting back to his aggressive offense in the beginning of the round. He’s throwing much more and leading. They trade jabs that miss, Canelo lands a right. Canelo looking for big power shots and combinations, Trout lands a counter. Action slows down. Now Trout lands an unanswered series. Canelo does a bit of showboating. Lots of head movement, shuffling around. Making Trout miss. Crowd loves it, but it’d be better if he threw more. Still, Canelo’s round, and it’s 85-85 through 9.

Rd 10: Wow, judges have Canelo up huge, including an 80-71 card. That’s ridiculous. Canelo lands a nice 1-2. Trout answers with his own combination. Now he’s coming forward. He’s leading now. Canelo lands with a nice series, Canelo answers with an uppercut from the ropes. Trout jabbing, sticking and moving. I think the round goes to Trout, who leaded the way. So I have him up 95-94, although the judges basically already have him losing.

Rd 11: Canelo with a very nice uppercut. He’s found a home for that. Trout looking to get back to the jab. Canelo landing with his straight right. Trout coming forward, but Canelo picks him off with a nice counter. Another uppercut for Canelo, and another, it backs Trout off. Canelo fired up now. He’s tired but he’s throwing big bombs. The two trade at the bell, solid action, round to Canelo, so we have it even at 104-104.

Rd 12: Canelo opens up to begin the round, finding a home for his right hand. Trout getting a bit desperate, he knows he’s behind big on the scorecards, but that’s absurd. Trout opening up now, firing away. Canelo gassed. Throws a lead right. Trout coming forward, Canelo picking him off. Both men slow down. Canelo lands an uppercut. And now a very nice straight right, that punch probably takes him the round, and the fight, on our card. Although the judges have it all lopsided, apparently.

ProBoxing-Fans.com scores the fight 114-113 for Canelo.

Official scorecards: 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109 for Canelo

This was a very close fight. It could have gone either way. Scorecards don’t do it, or Trout, justice.
