Canelo vs. Lopez Round by Round Results
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez retained his WBC 154-pound title with a 5th-round TKO over game-as-hell Josesito Lopez. Alvarez, 41-0-1 (30 KOs) was relentless. Lopez, 31-5 (18 KOs), was battered both upstairs and downstairs and though bloodied and battered, it was the body-punching of Alvarez that took Lopez out of this fight. It was a one-sided bout, but an entertaining one nonetheless.
There’s nothing unusual about a rabid Vegas fight throng, but a Canelo fight on Mexican Independence Day has created a little extra crackle, with the MGM crowd very lit up and ready for action. Canelo really puts the fannies in the seats. The referee, in his final fight as the third man in the ring, was Joe Cortez.
Rd 1: Canelo and a softer-looking Lopez studied each other in the middle of the ring. A right landed by Canelo. Lopez peeled off a combination before moving away. Big right by Canelo. Right away, his punches resonate differently–more solid and thudding. Canelo opened up a combo up and down, finishing with a nice hook downstairs. Lopez fires back. Good opening round.
Rd 2: Canelo flashing a nice jab. Lopez pins Canelo on the ropes and unleashes in an exciting moment. Canelo redoubles his effort and strafes Lopez’ body with big shots. 6-punch combo by Alvarez. Nice hook by Lopez. Good action. Canelo lands a right and avoids the Lopez attack. Canelo showing poise and defense in avoiding the rapid Lopez volleys. Huge left to the body of Lopez! Lopez goes down! He rises at 9 and returns to his corner as the bell rings. He is now bleeding from his nose and mouth.
Rd 3: Lopez tries to move to open the 3rd, with Canelo patiently working behind the jab. Another body shot puts Lopez down. He rises at 8. Canelo works him over in the corner. A double-dogged Lopez fires back, but alas–he’s undersized and underpowered. Another Alvarez fusillade at the 30-second mark. Lopez fires back passionately. No problem for Canelo.
Rd 4: A sharp, accurate, and hard-hitting Canelo bangs Lopez around some more and stiffens Lopez with a big straight right. Lopez spins out, but is bloody and struggling to find a grip on his dilemma. Cortez calls a low blow and gives Lopez a brief reprieve. Lopez says he’s ready. Lopez opens up with a furious combo. Canelo comes forward and another big combination drops Lopez in the corner just at the bell. He gets up.
Rd. 5: Canelo fired booming lefts to the body of Lopez, who is as game as they come. Lopez is getting battered, but firing back with gusto and even appeared to sting Canelo with a big right. Canelo is teeing off, especially effective to the body. Lopez is trying just so hard, it’s hard to not root for the kid. After raking Canelo with some shots and a big left uppercut. Canelo then acted suddenly. He worked him over with some potent shots. An uppercut shook him and a right hand that wobbled Lopez brought in Joe Cortez for a well-timed stop. The time was 2:55. A nice performance for Canelo, whose star continues to rise. For Lopez, it was a rough outing, but not one that should be held against him, considering the size differential.
Undercard Results
Jhonny Gonzalez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon
In an upset, Daniel “Ponce” De Leon won the WBC Featherweight Title with an 8-round unanimous technical decision over reigning champion Jhonny Gonzalez. The fight went to the cards after an accidental butt opened a bad cut over the eye of Gonzalez. At the time of the stoppage, De Leon had appeared to be coming on and taking control of the fight.
This bout pitted a pair of featherweights with 80 combined knockouts and two longtime Mexican standouts each looking for a big win on their country’s Independence Day. It was also the WBC champion Gonzalez’ 31st birthday. De Leon, 125.5, opened strongly flashing a fast southpaw 1-2. Using his longer frame, Gonzalez, 125, tried to establish distance with some long straight shots. Action picked up toward the end of the 2nd, with little to separate the two battlers and the spoiled crowd getting restless. A head butt at the end of the second saw De Leon bleeding from a cut on his hairline.
Gonzalez had a better 3rd round, landing a few clean right hands. But for the most part, each man seemed timid to commit, definitely in observance of the power each man. A little exchanging broke out at the end of the 4th, but the action was scant, though probably controlled by Gonzalez and his superior control of distance and angles. In the 5th, it heated up a little bit with each fighter warming up and landing clusters of shots. In the 6th, the tedium gave way to an exchange, with De Leon sent through the ropes after De Leon followed up after staggering Gonzalez with a left. Gonzalez seemed OK and dragged himself up as the round ended.
De Leon let loose in the 7th, bombarding Gonzalez with a lot of shots, especially to the body. Gonzalez suddenly seemed spent, but started firing back in the final minute in a good round for Ponce. The 8th was slow and another head butt opened up a cut on Gonzalez’ eye. Jhonny seemed to be in some distress as a result, with the butt being very painful. After consulting with the doctor, it was determined Gonzalez could not see out of his right eye, sending the bout to the cards after 8 incomplete rounds. With the result inconclusive, the result was anybody’s guess. Gonzalez seemed to win more early rounds, but De Leon had scored a knockdown and was coming on. The scores were 77-74, and 79-72 (twice) for new WBC Featherweight Champion Daniel “Ponce” De Leon! The new champion De Leon, 32, goes to 44-4 (35 KOs), while Gonzalez falls to 52-8 (45 KOs).
Marcos Maidana vs. Jesus Soto-Karass
In a absolute back-and-forth war, Marcos Maidana, 32-3 (29 KOs) stopped Jesus Soto-Karass, 26-8-3 (17 KOs) at 43 seconds into the 8th round after referee Martin Bayless gave a battered Soto-Karass the hook. Maidana, 147, now trained by Robert Garcia, opened sharply despite being known as a slow starter. With neither known for defense, the landed punches were many right from the beginning, with the former WBA Junior Welterweight champion holding an edge, but Soto-Karass, 147, acquitting himself well. Maidana even flashed a newly-discovered jab. Round 2 saw Maidana peppering Soto-Karass with the jab of all things. Some big hooks by Maidana wobbled Soto-Karass, with Soto-Karass gamely battling back, but looking a bit outgunned.
The action picked up even more in the third, with Maidana showing a more technical side under the new guidance of coach Garcia. The game Soto-Karass kept trying to work his way into the fight, but took tremendous punishment in an effort to do so. An increasingly intense battle was getting chippy, with referee Kenny Bayless taking a point off each guy on the same break. The two traded in even trading to the bell. The crowd is getting heated up and the fight is turning into a nice little brawl. in the 5th, each man heaved themselves at each other, with Soto-Karass having his second good round in a row.
Maidana had some nice moments to open the 6th, causing a nick on the eye of Soto-Karass to open up a bit. But the old warhorse won’t stop chugging and his sheer volume is troubling the now-distressed Maidana. Inspirational stuff from Soto-Karass now, as he rakes Maidana with shots up and down to take the round. And somehow we’re only halfway through the scheduled 12.
Soto-Karass, throwing 100 punches a round, continued his ridiculous punch-rate and Maidana got a point taken away. Hitting on the break constantly, Maidana is now flirting with a DQ. Soto-Karass, a little bigger than anyone Maidana has fought, continued troubling Maidana, who is floundering a bit. A big Maidana right with 30 seconds left helped his cause and a huge Maidana right put Soto-Karass down right at the end of the round. Wow! Maidana was just looking to be losing traction and turned it around with his big power.
The 8th looked bad for Soto-Karass, as a series of huge rights put Soto-Karass on the ropes. Maidana unloaded and Kenny Bayless stepped in, giving Marcos Maidana a hard-fought 8th-round TKO win. What an absolutely fun fight to watch!
Leo Santa Cruz vs. Eric Morel
IBF Bantamweight Champion Leo Santa Cruz is a fighter fans will soon be hearing more of. The non-stop attack of Santa Cruz, 21-0-1 (12 KOs), was too much for game Morel, 46-4 (23 KOs), stopping the veteran at the end of the 5th round. Santa Cruz, 117, opened quickly and soon was warmed up, throwing punches at a frenetic pace. The left hook to the body was landing with a regularity that is hard to remember. Morel was gallant, but not nearly as sharp with shots that did not resound with the same thud as Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz ripped combination punches, with a Morel soon looking to be out of answers. The passionate attack of the 24-year old Santa Cruz began sapping the body of the 36-year old former flyweight titlist.
By the end of the 5th, Morel,118, was looking the worse for wear. His corner wisely decided to run up the white flag, giving Santa Cruz his 1st title defense. Sure, Santa Cruz hasn’t beaten a top guy yet and he says this is his last fight at 118, but the future looks to be bright.
