In the second fight of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Amir Khan HBO pay-per-view from Las Vegas, veteran Mauricio Herrera took on unbeaten and heavily hyped Frankie Gomez.
While Herrera is best known for his hard luck, not getting decisions and credit he has deserved, this time his hard luck was simply not being in the fight. From the opening bell, things were all Gomez, who got off quicker, looked sharper, and stayed busier.
Gomez appeared to win every round in the 10-round fight. Action stayed mostly consistent throughout, with Herrera getting a cut under his left eye in the second round. Herrera didn’t have it this evening, whether it was some ring rust, an off night against a top prospect turned contender, or all of those battles he has had catching up with him.
The official scorecards read: 100-90, 100-90, 100-90.
