Scott Levinson: I would like Trout’s chances a lot better against any other 154-pounder in the world. Several fights ago, Alvarez may have been too unseasoned for the thoughtful approach and resourcefulness of Trout. Over the past few years, however, Alvarez has rounded into form and is ready to start notching the kind of wins befitting his near-superstar status. The bigger Canelo will be able to time Trout with big shots. His punches will stand out among the exchanges.

I see a competitive and well-matched fight where both men have their moments. In the end, the more punishing work of Canelo will be enough for him to win by a head at the wire.

Prediction: Canelo via Unanimous Decision

Rich Thomas: Trout has the stuff to make him work for every single point, but Canelo is the coming man in the 154 lbs division. He has to poise to overcome Trout’s trickery, and the power to hammer out a win.

Prediction: Canelo via Unanimous Decision

Jake Emen: I have overlooked Austin Trout in the past, and I won’t be doing that again here. He has earned his spot, and he has a great repertoire of skill. Miguel Cotto came up short in two areas against Trout — he was outsized and physically overmatched, and at his age and after all of his battles, he didn’t seem to have that extra gear he needed, particularly against a bigger, younger guy. Canelo won’t have those issues, and while Trout may find him easy to hit, Canelo shouldn’t be deterred by the incoming fire, and should be able to unleash his own bigger shots in return. I like Canelo to take home a decision in a spirited, close fight.

Prediction: Canelo via Unanimous Decision

Guy Michels: This is a real 50-50 fight and I wouldn’t be surprised to see either man walk away the victor. Alvarez probably has the advantage in the power department while Trout possesses the slight edge when it comes to speed. If Alvarez gets into his rhythm I think he’ll win with relative ease, however, I feel Trout’s versatility should stop the Mexican getting comfortable, and could be the crucial factor in the fight’s outcome. Against Cotto, Trout showed his ability to mix it on both the inside and the outside using his effective jab early on and physically dominating Cotto in the closing rounds. When you factor in that Trout is also a tricky southpaw I feel that the man from El Paso will just about prevail in what should be an enthralling contest.

Prediction: Trout via Split Decision

Doug Crego: In his last fight, Trout upset Miguel Cotto, in front of a pro-Cotto crowd at MSG.  He now finds himself with a shot to prove that his win over Cotto was no fluke. Skill-wise, Alvarez appears to be the less polished of the two. Trout, a southpaw, is a slick mover and good counter puncher. He doesn’t have great power but he does have enough pop to keep his opponents honest and often at bay. I think Alvarez will struggle in figuring and finding Trout. Alvarez can be hit and seems to have an inconsistent offensive pace, at times.

I think Trout will be busy enough to score versus a vulnerable Alvarez defense and bank rounds like he did versus Cotto. Alvarez may get frustrated by Trout’s elusiveness and pushed off his game plan by the large, pro-Canelo Alamodome crowd whose fervor will likely urge their 22-year-old hero forward into Trout’s stinging counter attack. Ultimately, Trout will leave Texas 2-0 versus the Alvarez family.

Prediction: Trout via Unanimous Decision
