Since hanging up the gloves in 2014, Carl Froch has become known as one of the most no nonsense pundits in all of boxing – just ask Anthony Joshua or Amir Khan.

And Froch has come out with some more of his trademark frank feedback, however for a different fighter than the two listed above.

There have been calls for Michael Conlan to retire following his stoppage loss to Jordan Gill this past weekend, which was his third inside the distance defeat in his last five fights.

And whilst Froch stopped short of calling for Conlan to hang up the gloves, he did implore the Irishman to “reassess his career.”

Quotes from Froch On Fighting.

“Conlan has had three knockout losses in his last five fights. It’s bad news.”

“He’s got a big following in Ireland and he’s got world title ambitions, but Jordan Gill is British or European level at best.”

“Conlan has got to reassess his career and ask how serious he is about boxing. It’s a tough sport, and when you get knocked out like that it’s not good for you.”

Though Conlan turned professional with a reputation as perhaps Ireland’s greatest ever amateur boxer, the professional code did not return him the same success and it is difficult to envisage him winning a world title at this stage.

He went into the fight with Gill a firm betting favourite in front of his beloved Belfast faithful, however never fully recovered from a heavy second round knockdown and the contest was eventually waved off in the seventh.

Money spinning clashes with the likes of Joe Cordina, Josh Warrington and Leigh Wood – all of which were touted beforehand – now seem a million miles away for Conlan.

As for Gill, he has resurrected his career from the brink and it is now he who looks likely to compete for world honours in 2024.
