For undefeated up and coming Jr. Welterweight prospect Carlos Molina (13-0, 7KOs), it doesn’t matter who is standing against across the ring from him, as long as they are ready to give a good fight. First slated to face fellow top prospect David Rodela (15-3-3, 6KOs) this coming Thursday night in the main event of Golden Boy Promotions’ “Fight Night Club” at the Nokia Live! in downtown Los Angeles, now Molina must face late sub John Figueroa (7-7-3, 3KOs) in the eight rounder.
“When I first heard of Rodela falling out, I was very disappointed,” Molina said of his original opponent. “He is another prospect and I thought it was a good step forward. I heard it was because he was in a car accident so I hope everything is ok with him.”
Despite his new opponent Figueroa having a .500 record, Molina, whose career is helmed by 2007 manager of the year Frank Espinoza, is still motivated to put on a great fight for the fans, “I never underestimate anybody and I know Figueroa is a tough guy. I have seen one of his fights and he is much better than his record shows. I’m ready to put on a show.”
The story line for the Molina-Rodela face off was an explosive one as both are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and live in the greater L.A. area with Molina in Rosemead and Rodela in Oxnard. It is exactly the type of match up Molina yearns to be in. “I want to go in with the best. Those are the fights I want to be in,” Molina said. “If it’s against Rodela early next year, even better. The fans want the fight and I think there is unfinished business.”
