Fifty-five bouts took place in 2016 Junior Open and Youth National Championships semifinal competition on Friday in Reno, Nev. All of the day’s winners in today’s bouts at the Grand Sierra Resort Summit Pavilion moved on to Saturday’s championship round.
Women’s action moved in to full swing on Friday with multiple returning champions and world medalists stepping in to the ring in the female division. Reigning world champion Lupe Gutierrez (Sacramento, Calif.) took the ring for the first time on Friday at the 2016 Junior Open and Youth National Championships. Gutierrez faced Avigail Narro (Grafton, N.D.) in youth division lightweight competition on semifinal night. The two engaged in an entertaining bout with a loud crowd cheering them on. Gutierrez won a unanimous decision over Narro to advance to a championship round match-up with 2015 Junior Olympic national champion Andrea Medina (Chula Vista, Calif.).
2015 World Championships silver medalist Kylie Hall (Fresno, Calif.) took on fellow Junior and Youth World Championships team member Annalicia Sustaita (Garland, Texas) in the youth division light welterweight competition on Friday afternoon. Hall won a 3-0 decision over Sustaita in her youth opener to move on to a finals day contest with Thessanae Borrego (Lubbock, Texas).
In the women’s youth division bantamweight semifinal bout, World Championships bronze medalist Yarisel Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev.) made an impressive foray in to her new age division. Ramirez won a fourth round TKO over Angie Ornelas (Beaverton, Ore.) to clinch her spot in the finals where she will face Mariana Gonzalez (Sunnyvale, Calif.).
A defending youth titlist and a 2015 Junior Olympic National Champion faced off in the men’s youth division light flyweight semifinal on Friday afternoon. It was experience winning out over youth in the match-up as Dylan Price (Sicklerville, N.J.) took a 3-0 victory over Japhethlee Llamido (Norwalk, Calif.).
Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) navigated his way through the deepest weight division in the tournament and secured his spot in the finals with a unanimous decision victory over Victor Morales (Vancouver, Ore.) in men youth division bantamweight competition. Davis’ semifinal win moves him on to a championship night match-up with 2015 Junior World Champion Marc Castro (Fresno, Calif.).
In the youth men’s super heavyweight division, defending junior champion Richard Torrez (Tulare, Calif.) and youth titlist Devon Young (Aiken, S.C.) battled for a berth in the championship round. Unlike the light flyweight division, it was the younger competitor taking the victory. Torrez won the bout by second round TKO to move on to the finals where he will face defending youth division heavyweight champion Rafael Gaitian (Forrest Hill, Texas).
Both Garcia brothers advanced on to the finals together with semifinal wins today at the Summit Pavilion. Ryan Garcia (Victorville, Calif.) will compete in the youth division lightweight final in a bout with and Sean Garcia (Victorville, Calif.) will battle Junior World Championships silver medalist Jesse Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) in the junior division light flyweight finale.
