Miguel Cotto vs. Ricardo Mayorga on Showtime PPV; Yuri Foreman-Pawel Wolak on the Undercard:
It’s official, on March 12th from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, Miguel Cotto will be defending his WBA junior middleweight title against Ricardo Mayorga. The bout is actually going to be promoted through Showtime Pay-Per-View. The card is also notable for another reason, it marks the first time in five years that Bob Arum and Don King will be working together on an event.
For Cotto, it will be the first defense of his 154 lbs title that he won last May, and only his second appearance at the weight. It’s not exactly a meeting against a top contender, either.
Including his loss to Cory Spinks in December of 2003, Ricardo Mayorga, now 37 years old, has fought just eight times in the past seven years. In those eight bouts, he sports just a 4-4 record. The four wins are over a very modest group of fighters, to say the least. They came against a faded Fernando Vargas, Michele Piccirillo, Michael Walker and Eric Mitchell. The four losses, meanwhile, include three by KO or TKO. He hasn’t had a win at junior middleweight since August of 2005, against Piccirillo.
In other words, sounds like more of the same matchmaking from Top Rank. The card will be going up against another mediocre bout, Sergio Martinez vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk, which will be aired on HBO.
The co-features on the undercard of the PPV have already been announced as well. Two other junior middleweights will be battling each other out for a title shot in the future, with Yuri Foreman, the man Cotto won his title from, meeting Pawel Wolak. Then, female boxing legend Christy Martin will be on the card, seeking to grab a 50th win in her career.
Stay tuned in the coming days and weeks for more updates and information regarding Cotto vs. Mayorga and all of the rest of the breaking boxing news that you need!
