Terence Crawford has fired back at Canelo Alvarez after the Mexican was critical of his resume.

Canelo and Crawford are reportedly closing in on a mega fight, which is set to be staged on Mexican Independence Day weekend in September in Las Vegas, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger.

Unified super middleweight champion, Alvarez has previously been dismissive of a showdown with Crawford, who campaigns at two weight classes below him.

However, after both men met with Saudi Arabian boxing chief Turki Alalshikh in London last week, they are now on course to meet later this year, with Crawford set to move up to 168lbs to face the 34-year-old.

In recent days, comments from Alvarez, who overcame Edgar Berlanga in September, have resurfaced on social media, from an interview with TMZ Sports in September 2023, where he claimed that ‘Bud’ has just one standout victory on his record against Errol Spence Jr.

“I respect Terence Crawford,” the 34-year-old said.

“He’s a very talented fighter, but he just win one big fight.

“If you see his record, he just beat one good fighter [which] Errol Spence is.

“Other than that, I don’t think he’s beaten other great fighters like Spence.

“He did a really good job with Spence, he made it look very easy.

“But I knew Terence Crawford was a great fighter.”

The Omaha native has recorded one win since overcoming Spence, capturing the WBA super welterweight title with a unanimous decision over Israil Madrimov in August to match Alvarez’s feat in becoming a four-weight world champion.

Crawford responded to the comments in a post on his X account, warning his rival of his history of making elite fighters look ordinary.

“Lol that’s crazy!

“So every fighter I’ve fought is not good but one?

“Noted! Just remember what you said because I’ve always had the joy in making somebody’s look like nobody’s.”

Canelo is expected to defend his belts in May in Las Vegas, although no opponent is finalised and it remains unknown whether Crawford will fight before facing the Mexican great.
