Gennady Golovkin has reportedly been offered a shock showdown with Terence Crawford in Saudi Arabia.

Crawford, who became WBA super welterweight champion earlier this month after beating Israil Madrimov in Los Angeles, has been chasing a fight with Canelo Alvarez, whom Golovkin has faced three times.

Golovkin, one of the most feared knockout artists in his heyday, has not fought since defeat to Alvarez in their trilogy clash in September 2022, but fuelled rumours of a comeback after confirming that he had not announced his retirement.

“Would I be interested in an interesting offer? Yeah we have a lot of interest here,” the 42-year-old told Reuters.

“I would say, never say never.

“We shall see. I am very comfortable in my position I feel great.

“I am at the peak of my form and I would say if something comes up we will look into that.”

Crawford’s bout with Madrimov was the first venture outside of Saudi Arabia for Turki Alalshikh, who is the Chairman of the General Entertainment authority and responsible for putting on fights for Riyadh Season.

Alalshikh has been involved in a public spat with Alvarez after the Mexican superstar refused to agree to a fight with Crawford until after the conclusion of his September 14 super middleweight title defence against Edgar Berlanga and was critical of the way the highly influential Saudi Arabian conducts his business.

The 43-year-old announced his intentions to make a clash between Crawford and Vergil Ortiz Jr, who climbed off the canvas twice to beat Serhii Bohachuk earlier this month.

However, Alalshikh has since backtracked on these comments, insisting the four-weight world champion is only focused on securing a bout with Alvarez.

“I don’t think Crawford will fight anyone except Canelo,” Alalshikh told Charlie Parsons.

“We [will] give him an offer for [Vergil] Ortiz, [but] I don’t know if he’ll take it or not.

“We have an agreement to do [a] big fight for Ortiz if Crawford doesn’t take the fight.”
