After the strange ending to the Steve Cunningham vs. Yoan Pablo Hernandez bout, and the suspicious scorecards which enabled Hernandez to win the bout and take home Cunningham’s cruiserweight title, a rematch has been ordered by the IBF. That’s the second rematch that the IBF has mandated for bouts they have sanctioned with atypical and unsatisfying results, following their mandate that a rematch take place between Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares.
The ruling states that Cunningham-Hernandez II should take place in the next 120 days. In addition, the winner will have to take on mandatory challenger Troy Ross next. Ross, of course, already met Cunningham, and he feels the ending to their bout was controversial as well.
Don’t be surprised if Cunningham-Hernandez II takes place a bit farther in the future than that timeframe though, as Hernandez will need to heal completely from the cuts which were the cause of the first fight’s stoppage.
Stay tuned for more updates and any official word and when and where the rematch will take place.
