Gervonta Davis has opened up on the breakdown of his relationship with former promoter Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Davis signed with Mayweather Promotions in 2015, two years after turning professional, but left the former five-weight world champion in 2022.
Despite parting ways, Mayweather has been supportive of the Baltimore man and was pictured in the ring with him prior to his seventh round knockout of Ryan Garcia in April 2023.
Speaking ahead of his fight against Lamont Roach on Saturday in Brooklyn, ‘Tank’ claims his former mentor does not want to see any fighter surpass his legacy.
“Floyd don’t want to see a fighter do better than him,” the 30-year-old said during a media scrum on Thursday.

“Why the f*** would you say Terence Crawford should fight Benavidez?
“That don’t make no f***ing sense.
“He don’t want to never see no fighter do better than him, I’m telling you.

“I love the fighter.
“I ain’t going to lie, if he was chill, he’d be the smoothest, but he’s not.
“He was a great fighter, but it’s always ‘I’m this, I’m that.’”

Davis defends his WBA lightweight world title against former amateur rival Roach at Barclays Center.
Roach, who is moving up from 130lbs where he holds the WBA crown, will have five days to inform the WBA of which the two titles he will keep and defend, should he pull off the upset.

Davis knocked out Frank Martin in the eighth round in Las Vegas in June and has promised that Roach is in for a shock when they clash.
“He’s in for a rude awakening for sure,” he said at Wednesday’s media workout.
“He’s done what he had to do, trying to psyche himself up for the fight.
“But come March 1st, it’s all about skill vs skill and who has the better skill that night is going to be the victorious person.”
