You may have already heard a small bit of boxing news this weekend – that Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao is set for May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, televised via a joint PPV production with HBO and Showtime.
That means that the proposed May 2nd fight between Canelo Alvarez and James Kirkland had to be moved. Oscar De La Hoya had previously said he would keep Canelo vs. Kirkland on that date no matter what… unless Mayweather-Pacquiao happened.
So here we are. Instead, Canelo will face Kirkland the weekend after, on May 9th, with the fight taking place from Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
Here’s what De La Hoya had to say about the situation:
“The week around Cinco de Mayo will be the biggest in years for boxing, bridging the present and the future as the three biggest stars in the sport all step into the ring in just a seven-day period.
“It is my hope and belief that this May week will usher in a new era of our sport, one in which we as a sport give fans what they want, the best facing the best.”
