Undefeated super middleweight Derrick “Take it to the Bank” Webster (18-0, 9 KOs) said he wanted to make a statement when he took on once-beaten Obodai Sai (23-2, 17 KOs) in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, and a statement he made.
Just after the opening bell, Webster threw a pair of quick jabs as he controlled from the center of the ring. Sai then attempted to throw a right hand to the body that was met by a perfectly-timed counter right hook, left hook combo to the temple that immediately made his knees buckle. Webster then stepped forward and switched to orthodox before firing a thunderous right hook that would be his final punch of the night after watching Sai crumble just seconds after his previous combo had landed. Following the blows, Sai was out cold as he crouched in his own corner with the referee counting him out. When the count of 10 had been reached, this bout was over after a mere 22 seconds.
“We talked about me going out there and taking care of business, and that’s exactly what we did,” Webster said of the game plan that he and trainer Denny Brown discussed. “It’s time for these so-called future champions to stop ducking me. They need to fight. There have been too many fights getting pulled out from under me. I train too hard for this, and I deserve the opportunity.”
This emphatic win places an exclamation point on what has been the best year for Webster in his professional boxing career. In addition to adding four more victories to his resume in 2014, the Glassboro native signed with DandD Management in February and then inked a promotional contract with GH3 Promotions just over a month ago.
As he now sets his sights on 2015, Webster looks to continue stepping up in class until he eventually reaches his ultimate goal of a world championship. The undefeated southpaw has repeatedly had contracts in place to face some of the top prospects in the sport over the past two years, but he has fell victim to every reason possible as to why those fights have not taken place. With a strong managerial and promotional team on his side, he now awaits the brighter lights and bigger opportunities he deserves.
