Derry Mathews says his radar is now locked on deadly Cuban champ Richar Abril for their clash on Saturday, April 18th at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
Mathews destroyed Hungarian Gyorgy Mizsei Jnr. with a massive right hand in the fifth round last Friday night at the Echo Arena to clear the path for his dream world title showdown against Abril.
Although Abril is leagues above Mizsei, dynamite punching Mathews, who has KO’d 20 out of his 37 wins, showed that he’s armed and ready for the biggest night of his life.
“I feel that I did a great job on Mizsei without taking any silly risks to get get the job done and in devastating fashion.
“I’m under no illusion, Mizsei is not Abril, but I showed that I can turn the power on and take someone out when I need to. Abril is in my eyes the best lightweight on the planet and I will prepare for him accordingly.
“He can be beat and I’ve got to be smart how I do it. I’ve got a good boxing brain after all my years in the amateurs, winning the Junior Olympics and 48 fights in the pros, and I know I’ve got the power to hurt him.
“It’s going to be a huge night at the Echo Arena and with the place packed with my fans I know they will push me on to achieve my dream of finally winning the world title.”
