Pavlik vs. Rosinsky Results
Kelly Pavlik improved his record to 40 (34) – 2 with a Unanimous Decision win against Will Rosisnky, who falls to 16-2. Pavlik sent Rosinsky down in the 2nd round with a short right hand to the point of the chin, but Rosinsky recovered, and continued coming on for the duration. However, Pavlik’s size and superior skill and power were more than enough to control the bout.
Official scorecards read 97-92 and 98-92 twice, all for the former middleweight champion. Pavlik suffered a cut over his left eyebrow in the 4th round.
Now, he’s looking ahead to a top level fight. He feels he’s ready for a big opportunity, if it’s available to him, and he mentioned all the big names in the division, Andre Ward, Carl Froch and Lucian Bute. However, all of those guys are tied up right now, so Pavlik will need to find somebody else to fight.
Ultimately, he did what he needed to do, but it wasn’t a particularly impressive or dominant showing, and either Froch or Ward would be a big favorite to defeat him.
Donaire vs. Mathebula Results
In the main event, Donaire also knocked his man down in the early going, only to have to keep battling all the way through the scheduled distance for the judges’ verdict. Donaire sent Mathebula down in the 4th with a blur of a left hook which Mathebula simply never saw coming. He was badly hurt at the end of the round, but luckily had a full minute to recover.
Still, he appeared to be on shaky legs, but Donaire took his time and looked for the right opportunity to pounce on him. Surprisingly that never came, and Mathebula survived the 5th round, and survived for the duration of the fight.
That doesn’t mean he survived intact, however. Donaire cracked one of his teeth in the 11th Round, which bothered the South African in a major way, and cut down his work rate almost completely.
At the end of the bout, the final scoercards read 117-110, 118-109 and 119-108, all for the Filipino Flash. The fight appeared to be closer than that, however, as Mathebula threw almost double the punches that Donaire threw for the majority of the bout. Donaire was looking to put on a show and find the homerun punch, whereas Mathebula just kept on working. But all of the power certainly lied with Donaire, and he deserved to win the fight.
He now holds the WBO and IBF super bantamweight titles, and he says he wants to unify to grab a 3rd title belt, which in his mind would be good enough to be the undisputed champion of the division. After that, he wants to keep on moving up to featherweight, and looking for more big fight opportunities.
