Caroline Dubois headlined a BOXXER Breakthrough card at York Hall, Bethnal Green and she picked up her first professional title, the vacant IBO lightweight strap with a wide points win against Magali Rodriguez, who was down three times during the contest.

Dubois had made serene progress as a professional to date after a stellar amateur career, while Rodriguez came into this one as a former world title challenger, and having held Estelle Mossely to a draw in her last contest.

The British favourite was on top in the main in the first half of the fight, making the visitor miss and then countering to maximum effect, but the Mexican came to life towards the end of the fifth, as she let her hands go and connected on ‘Sweet Caroline’.

Dubois regained control in the sixth, with a big right hand and a stiff follow-up dropping the 31-year-old, who saw out the round.

After strong seventh and eighth sessions, Dubois, 22, cranked up the pressure in the ninth, flooring Rodriguez with a well-timed right hand that the visitor did well to come back from, although she was counted once more from an accumulation of punches, but again survived the round.

To her credit, Rodriguez finished the bout strongly, but as the fight went to the cards, the result was a foregone conclusion.

Scores of 99-88, 98-89 and 97-90 saw Dubois crowned the new champion.

Riley wins English title

Viddal Riley passed his biggest test as a professional with flying colours, taking the vacant English cruiserweight title with a landslide points win against Nathan Quarless (12-1).

Riley (10-0, 6 KOs) was thoroughly on top throughout, and took the belt by three identical scores of 100-90.

Simpson eases past Macias

Callum Simpson is one of BOXXER’s brightest prospects, and he completely dominated Jose de Jesus Macias (28-13-4, 14 KOs) in a wide points win over ten at super middleweight.

Barnsley’s Simpson (13-0, 9 KOs) won 100-89 on all three scorecards and called for a showdown with British and Commonwealth champion, Jack Cullen in his post-fight interview.

Macedo shocks TKV

Jeamie TKV (5-1, 3 KOs) saw his unbeaten record go up in smoke, as he was halted in six rounds of his scheduled eight at heavyweight against Brazil’s Igor Adiel Macedo.

Macedo (12-1, 12 KOs) landed a huge right hand which opened up a gruesome cut on the Brit’s right eye and with blood pouring out, the referee waved off the contest.

Remaining Undercard

Stephen McKenna (14-0, 13 KOs) scored a career-best win, as he forced former British title challenger, Darren Tetley (22-5, 9 KOs) to retire at the end of the sixth round of their welterweight encounter.

Francesca Hennessy (1-0, 1 KOs) made her professional bow, and scored a knockout on debut, as she halted Sonia Klos (1-9, KO9) in the fifth round of a scheduled six at bantamweight.
