One of the most highly-touted stars in the sport today, Jaron Ennis is still searching for a welterweight world title shot, and with the belts tied up with July’s blockbuster undisputed showdown between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford, he must bide his time and first comes a scheduled twelve rounder against Roiman Villa at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City this Saturday night.
Premier Boxing Champions promote Ennis vs Villa, whilst SHOWTIME broadcast the IBF interim title bout in the USA.
Ennis (30-0, 27 KOs) gained a reputation as a knockout artist with several early wins and a 19-fight knockout streak, barring one no-decision, against several former contenders and gatekeepers until his most recent contest.
The 26-year-old still had too much for Karen Chukhadzhian in January, winning all twelve rounds on the way to claiming the interim IBF world title, that puts him in pole position for a shot at the full title should he come through here.
Venezuela’s Villa (26-1, 24 KOs) is a traditional South American banger, and is coming off a career-best win, upsetting Rashidi Ellis via majority decision over twelve on the same January card.
Prediction: Ennis will want to keep his eyes on the biggest prize, and I can’t see him slipping up here against Villa. Once the 30-year-old feels the true power of the Philadelphian, he should wilt before the halfway mark.
Gomez tackles Taylor
In ten round action on the undercard, Yoelvis Gomez (6-0, 5 KOs) another off the Cuban production line, can score an inside the distance victory in his middleweight contest against Marquis Taylor (14-1-2, 1 KO).
Remaining Undercard
Edwin De Los Santos (15-1, 14 KOs) should defend his WBC Continental Americas lightweight title on the cards over ten against Joseph Adorno (17-2-2, 14 KOs).
In eight rounders, Euri Cedeno (4-0, 4 KOs) can halt the unbeaten William Townsel (5-0, 4 KOs) at middleweight, and heavyweight hope Steven Torres (5-0-1, 5 KOs) can take his rematch against James Evans (6-0-1, 6 KOs) on points, following a drawn first bout.
