ESPN3 will show the 12-round Junior Middleweight title fight between “King” Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) of Mexico, and former titlist Cornelius “K9” Bundrage (33-5, 19 KOs) of Detroit, as part of a special boxing presentation on Saturday, October 11, at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The show, from the Grand Oasis Cancun resort in Cancun, Mexico, will also feature a 10-round Super Featherweight contest between Juan Pablo Sánchez (29-11, 13 KOs) of Mexico and Nicaragua’s René Alvarado (20-3, 14 KOs). Saturday’s fights will also be available via WatchESPN.
Molina last appeared on ESPN in March 2013, defeating Cory Spinks on ESPN Friday Night Fights. Since then, he won the title from Ishe Smith on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez pay-per-view fight in September 2013. Bundrage’s history with ESPN dates back to appearing on Season 2 of The Contender.
Molina vs. Bundrage is certainly an intriguing fight, but one which has slipped under the radar for most. Neither is a big draw, and that has been one of the large obstacles standing in the path of upwards momentum in Molina’s career.
Combined with out of the ring issues, bad decisions from judges, and a not always pleasing style in the ring, Molina has been on the shelf far too often. Hopefully he’s able to look good here and then move to a more high profile fight next.
