Add Floyd Mayweather to the list of high-profile current and former athletes and sports celebrities who wants to buy the Los Angeles Clippers. Oscar De La Hoya, frequent business partner and former opponent of Mayweather, released a statement declaring his interest as well.
Mayweather talked about his own desires to be a part of a team which buys the Clippers during fight week activities for his upcoming weekend pay-per-view clash against Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Known as “Money” Mayweather, the undefeated pound for pound kingpin has been the highest paid athlete in all of sports for several years running. So he certainly has plenty of cash laying around. He certainly wouldn’t have enough all on his own to finance a purchase of a NBA franchise, but he has accumulated enough wealth to be a major player in the game.
Of course, one small issue to overcome would be Mayweather’s well-known penchant for making huge sports bets, including on NBA games. That sounds like a problem that the Adam Silver, new commissioner of the NBA, and the rest of the NBA owners wouldn’t want to mess with. Mayweather has been known to pal around with Mark Cuban, though, and has plenty of close friends in the league.
Right now, nothing more than another rumor and another name to add to the mix. But it will be very interesting to see if Mayweather does end up trying to pursue something should Donald Sterling be forced to part with his team.
