Plotting Out Mayweather’s Next Fight:
The New Year may have just begun, but according to whom you want to believe, Floyd Mayweather’s next fight, and entire year of action, may already be planned. Rumors are swirling these days — many of them contradictory, of course — but there are two reports which have seemed to gather the most steam: that Floyd Mayweather is fighting Amir Khan in May, and that the long-awaited, well-overdue but still in-demand Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight will take place in September.
Mayweather vs. Khan in May 2014?
Amir Khan seems to be the leader in the clubhouse to land a Mayweather fight for this May. According to multiple reports, he has already signed his contract for the bout, but Mayweather and his team haven’t signed anything in return.
Khan has long coveted a Mayweather fight, and it’s something which has seemed to hurt his career. He looked past Lamont Peterson while salivating over a Mayweather fight, and he got KTFO by Danny Garcia while doing the same. Some guys just won’t learn.
While Mayweather vs. Khan isn’t the worst fight that the pound for pound kingpin could make, it’s far from the best. In fact, it’s pretty far down the list. Amir Khan has done absolutely zero since getting laid out by Garcia, and the bout would be nothing more than a time killer, presumably until September when…
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao in September 2014?
A Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight became a point of discussion once again immediately following Pacquiao’s easy comeback win over Brandon Rios. Now, some are saying that Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will happen in September 2014, in Mayweather’s second fight of the year.
Of course, all of this talk is based on a report, based on a report, based on a Youtube Video, citing an unnamed source. I’m serious. That’s how I discovered this “news”.
Meanwhile, others would have you believe that Mayweather dropped his WBC belt to avoid Pacquiao, now the number one contender.
So, who’s telling the truth? Nobody, really, since nobody actually knows!
As with all rumors pertaining to Mayweather’s fight schedule, I’ll believe it when I see it. For me, a Mayweather vs. Khan fight on its own would be a major disappointment at this stage. However, if it’s simply killing time until September to finally put together Mayweather vs. Pacquiao — the two teams aren’t on the same page in terms of a potential first half of the year time line for a fight, that much is known — then it’s not so bad, and fight fans will get one of their wishes for the year, and see what remains one of the best fights in the sport.
