Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm Set for next January:
Rounda Rousey’s next fight will come against Holly Holm, a former female boxing champion and one of the top women’s boxers of her era. The fight will take place on January 2, 2016.
Holm is 9-0 thus far in her mixed martial arts career, scoring six wins by knockout. Before she made the full-time switch from boxing to MMA, she had already dabbled in the cage, having several fights while still campaigning as a professional boxer. Since joining the UFC, it was clear that they’d like to get her to this kind of big stage, although it does come perhaps a bit early.
It’s also telling — and not surprising — that as Rousey and the UFC at large generally bash all things boxing, they go back to the boxing well to try to generate more interest.
Rousey will be heavily favored to win the affair, and should she win as expected, you can be sure that it’ll stir up more nonsense that MMA fighters are better than boxers, that MMA is the better sport, that Rousey would beat Floyd Mayweather and blah, blah, blah.
Of course, it doesn’t mean any of that. They’re different sports, and the match is being contested by MMA rules, with one fighter who is vastly more experienced and accomplished in that sport than the other.
Holm defeating Rousey would be a shock, but you can bet you’ll hear endless MMA vs. boxing talk during the promotion and buzz leading up to the fight.
