Birmingham’s undefeated Tommy Langford (17-0; 6KO’s) will challenge Chris Eubank Jr (23-1; 18KO’s) for the British Middleweight Championship after promoter Frank Warren today won the purse bid to stage the fight.
Langford, who holds the Commonwealth and WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight belts, will take on Eubank Jr at a venue and date to be confirmed.
Fresh from earning a hard-fought points decision over Lewis Taylor on the undercard of Terry Flanagan and Derry Mathews’ World title showdown back in March, Langford leapfrogged up the WBO World rankings.
The ‘Baggies Bomber’ found himself sitting pretty in second place in the WBO’s order of merit at 160lbs before successfully making the fourth defence of his WBO Inter-Continental title against Finland’s Timo Laine at the Cardiff Ice Arena in July.
Now the Devon-born middleweight star has his sights firmly fixed on Eubank Jr’s pride and joy.
“I’m delighted Frank Warren has won the purse bid and that I’ll be fighting for the famous Lonsdale Belt,” said Langford. “I need a scalp of his magnitude to project my profile and Eubank is one of the biggest names on the scene at the moment.
“We’ve sparred in the recent past and, though you can’t take too much into that, I know what he does well and what he doesn’t do well and believe my style exploits his. Sure, Chris Jr is dangerous but Billy Joe Saunders exposed his limitations with his quality and movement. I know I’ve got the tools to beat him, I hope he doesn’t do his usual when it comes to a big threat and vacate the title.”
