Anticipation is building for the June 2nd Brazilian boxing showdown – History In The Making — featuring the return of living legend, four-time world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas against undefeated, rising star Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira, at Conrad Punta Del Este and Resort Casino in Uruguay.
Oliveira’s father and president of the M.O. Productions boxing promotional company, Carlos Oliveira, reports that Brazilian junkets to the show are being scheduled, many celebrities have contacted him about attending the show, and the event will air live in Brazil on Globo TV as well as in Argentina.
The 36-year-old Freitas (38-2, 32 KOs) has been retired for nearly five years, since his last fight April 28, 2007. “Popo” is a former World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) lightweight champion, in addition to two-time WBO and World Boxing Association (“WBA”) super featherweight titlist. Between 1995 and 2007, Freitas defeated Joel Casamayor, Daniel Attah, Juan Carlos Ramirez, Jorge Rodrigo Barrios and Artur Grigorian.
Oliveira (17-0, 12 KOs), rated No. 13 by the World Boxing Council “WBC”) is unique among professional boxers as the oldest of three sons from affluent Brazilian family living in Miami. He attends Florida International University and had only two amateur matches before turning pro in 2008. Michael celebrates his 22nd birthday on April 26.
