Carl Froch admits he doesn’t buy Tyson Fury cut story

Froch has been a vocal critic of Fury, and has called the story about how his countryman sustained a cut into question.

There have been plenty of conspiracy theories floated since Tyson Fury withdrew from the undisputed heavyweight world title clash with Oleksandr Usyk due to a cut, with some supposing that Fury may have even intentionally inflicted the wound upon himself.

Carl Froch, who has been amongst Fury’s most fervent critics over the past twelve months, stopped short of going that far – although he is dubious about some details of the incident that caused the Usyk fight to be postponed.

It was announced earlier this month that ‘The Gypsy King’ had pulled out of the February 17th bout, reportedly having sustained a cut above the eye in a sparring session.

However, former super middleweight world champion Froch believes the injury was sustained well before the announcement was made.

Speaking to InstantCasino.com, ‘The Cobra’ also questioned whether or not Fury maintained the same passion for boxing that led him to becoming a two-time heavyweight world champion.

“I thought Tyson would pull out with an injury or he’d say I’ve got a bad back or something.

“But to be fair to him, to have a cut that requires actual stitches, then it’s a genuine injury and the fight does need delaying.

“They’ve announced that it has been rescheduled for May 18th but I’m still not convinced. I just don’t think Tyson Fury’s heart is in the game anymore.

“The only thing that I’d say that’s conspiratorial around that cut is the timing of it, because that injury for me is not an acute injury.

“It’s not fresh. That cut is a week old in my eyes. It was not a day old cut when they did that video.

“Why have they done that? Maybe because they’ve panicked and left it a week to get a plan in place.”

Fury vs Usyk has since been rescheduled for May 18th in Riyadh, though some pundits believe even this could be optimistic, given the severity of the Brit’s lesion.

IBF mandatory challenger Flip Hrgovic is on standby and will step in should the WBC champion fail to make the new date, meaning fans will be treated to a heavyweight showcase in Saudi regardless.
