Who will showcase superior pressure & firepower between Glen Johnson and Carl Froch?
On June 4 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the Super Six Tournament rolls on and will pit two will-breaking fighters together as “The Road Warrior” Glen Johnson will square off against the resourceful Englishman Carl Froch in the semi-finals of the tourney for Froch’s WBC super middleweight title.
Froch is coming off an impressive twelve round unanimous decision victory over Arthur Abraham to win the WBC super middleweight title, while Glen Johnson is coming off a stunning eighth round knockout victory over Allan Green, leading to what should be an intriguing matchup to send the winner to the finals of the tournament.
Both of these fighters love to brawl and make a boxing match into a street fight, so which fighter will have the edge?
Keys to victory: Carl Froch
Carl Froch will have most of the advantages in this fight and he knows that he is facing an opponent that will be right in front of him the whole night, and will be in Froch’s punching range to land big shots. Even though Froch likes to press the action, he has more than often skill to flip the switch during some points in the fight and box Johnson if he needs to, in order to keep him at bay.
Froch will also have youth and stamina on his side in this fight, and while it hasn’t happened yet, you can never discount the possibility that the clock will strike twelve in terms of Johnson’s age and ability, and he and his carriage will turn back into a pumpkin overnight.
Quickness and handspeed will also be to Froch’s advantage, which means that instead of resorting to brawling in the fight, he should use his jab effectively early on, and keep the fight in the middle of the ring. He can turn up the heat later but it wouldn’t be wise to dismiss his inherit advantages here from the opening bell. If Froch can do these things effectively in this fight, then I believe he will advance to the Super Six Finals.
Keys to victory: Glen “The Road Warrior” Johnson
In order to win this fight against Froch and move on, The Road Warrior will have to do what he always does to win his fights, impose his unbelievable will. Even at the age of 42, Glen is going to have to stay in punching range the whole night, and be willing to take in order to give.
Glen will have the reach advantage, but reach will not be a factor as Froch is the better boxer in this fight, so brawling is the only way I see Glen pulling this fight off. Glen needs to bully Froch all over the ring on June 4, and most importantly, on the ropes in hopes of tiring out the younger fighter in the later rounds. If Johnson can wear Froch out or catch him with something big, I feel he will shock the world once again and move onto the Super Six Finals.
Conclusion
Both of these fighters can brawl and both of these fighters have unbelievable determination and heart, which will make this fight a great one. As for who wins, it will depend on which Glen Johnson shows up; the 42-year-old that fights like he’s 22, or if finally, the 42-year-old who looks his age. The older Johnson will be overmatched by Froch, but the ageless wonder has been defying the odds for a decade and counting, making this bout all the more intriguing and captivating.
