At a World Boxing Council and Legends of Boxing Museum induction ceremony dinner in Coachella, California…The mood was celebratory and buzzing in excitement of the anticipation in honoring some of boxing’s most admired contributors.
Amongst the distinguished honorees, Gabriel Sarmiento was named 2010 Trainer of The Year. The Argentine born Sarmiento, best known for his signature work with undisputed Middleweight king Sergio Martinez, engineered the strategy that resulted in a win against Kelly Pavlik for the middleweight title in 2010. Sarmiento then went back to work as the architect of the winning strategy for Martinez that exposed Paul Williams and resulted in devastating second round Knock Out of The Year by Fighter of The Year, Sergio Martinez.
Although Gabriel was unable to personally attend the ceremony, his brother Pablo Sarmiento along with Strength & Conditioning Coach Cicilio Flores, read a letter to the audience prepared by Sarmiento:
“Before I begin to thank the WBC organization, I greatly apologize for not being able to be present to receive this great honor. Once more the American dream has become reality. This is what I dreamt about 3 years ago when I arrived in Oxnard, invited by the Garcia Family. I dedicate this award to Spain & Argentina, from where I created a Hispanic-American boxing school and the results of that are this award. Thank you to: Pablo Sarmiento, Cicilio Flores, Adam Flores, Dr. Anderson, Abraham Lopez, Roger Romo, David Sanchez, Nydia Flores, Ricardo Atocha, Sampson Lewkowicz & Lou Dibella. I give many thanks to this WBC organization for this award for recognizing the hard work & sacrifice that we put forth.”
Gabriel Sarmiento trains out of the World Crown Sports Training Center located in Oxnard, California where he works with boxing’s up and coming prospects such as Javier Fortuna, Victor Cayo & Lucas Matthysse.
