Ryan Garcia has a three-fight plan after facing Devin Haney, before claiming he will retire from boxing.
Garcia challenges Haney for his WBC super lightweight world title on April 20 at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, live on DAZN pay-per-view.
The 25-year-old was knocked out in the seventh round by Gervonta Davis in their 136lb catchweight clash last April, which was one of the biggest bouts of 2023.
‘King Ry’ insists a rematch with ’Tank’ is a priority for him as well as showdowns with WBO super lightweight titlist, Teofimo Lopez and current WBC lightweight champion, Shakur Stevenson.
“I want to end my career fighting Tank Davis for the second time at 140lbs” Garcia told DAZN.
“After I defeat Devin, [I will fight] Teofimo, Shakur and then Tank and then I’m done.
“I’ve got to run that back [against Davis].”
The Californian returned to the super lightweight division to knock out Oscar Duarte in the eighth round in December.
Garcia, insists he was depleted when he fought Davis, particularly as a result of a post weigh-in rehydration clause which prevented him from coming in any higher than 10lbs over the 136lb limit on the morning of the fight.
“Everybody knows I was extremely handicapped,” Garcia said on ESPN’s First Take.
“So, I don’t care what people say.
“If I was at my full strength, Tank wouldn’t have beaten me.
“He obviously handicapped me and he did everything in his power to make it the hardest thing for me.
“I just went with it, because boxing was boring.
“Nobody was watching it anymore the same weigh we used to watch Floyd [Mayweather Jr] and Oscar [De La Hoya] and the energy was there.
“So, I basically said I’m going to take matters in my own hands and I’m not going to let anything he puts in front of my place, I’m going to eat it, whatever it is.
“I’ve got to just do it, because this is going to propel one, my career and it’s going to propel boxing, so I did it with that in my mind.
“Was it tough? Yeah, I felt like I was going to die in training camp losing all that weight.”
Garcia came face-to-face with Haney at a press conference in New York on Tuesday and will meet him for the final time before fight week at a second news conference on Thursday in Los Angeles.
The pair are tied at three wins apiece in the amateurs and fight as professionals for the first time in April.
‘King Ry’ laughed off suggestions in the press conference that his long-time rival would knock him out in the opening round and even vowed to retire if such a scenario occurred.
