Gavin vs. Cook Off: Cook too Heavy to Safely Make Weight

The main event of Saturday’s Sky Sports card has now been canceled. The match was supposed to pit Frankie Gavin vs. Jason Cook. Gavin, 8-0 with 7 KOs, is a former world amateur champion, and Cook was a former EBU and IBO lightweight champion. The bout was put together on short notice however, and the British Boxing Board of Control has ruled that Cook is too heavy to safely make weight for the fight just days away.

The bout was made on such short notice because the previous main event for the card had already been canceled as well. The Gavin vs. Cook bout was in replacement for the rematch between Tony Bomber Bellew and Ovill McKenzie. Bellew hurt his hand in training while finishing his preparations and had to withdraw at the last minute. So, Gavin, one of the top British boxing prospects, was thrown into the mix in a step up bout against a seasoned veteran. But Cook didn’t have enough time to get himself in shape. The BBBoC then stepped in and called it all off, leaving the future of the rest of Saturday night’s card in jeopardy as well.
