Boxing’s fastest rising superstar, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has been honored with numerous year-end awards capping an extraordinary year of achievement for the WBA and IBO Middleweight World Champion, which saw four knockout performances in the ring and tremendous growth in his TV ratings.
Golovkin earned the ProBoxing-Fans.com 2013 Champion of the Year award.
Among the many other awards honoring his 2013 calendar were USA Today’s “Fighter of the Year” and Yahoo Sports’ “Knockout of the Year” from his dominant stoppage over former world champion Nobuhiro Ishida on MARCH 30 in Monte Carlo.
ESPN.com honored Golovkin by naming two of his four knockouts among their top five “Knockouts of the Year” for the Ishida stoppage and a spectacular body shot stoppage over Matthew Macklin on JUNE 29.
Additionally, Jim Lampley speaking on HBO’s The Fight Game named Golovkin the “Fighter of the Year” alluding to his burgeoning rise in the sporting world along with his rapidly rising fan base as outlined by his soaring TV ratings on the network.
Golokvin was also named “Fighter of the Year” in two fan polls for RingTv.com and World Boxing News further proving his popularity with boxing fans.
“What were seeing with Gennady is truly unique,” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions. “From his first HBO bout in the United States in September of 2012, his TV ratings have continued to rise dramatically with media and fan interest increasing with every appearance.”
“With a substantial increase in TV ratings with each fight, Gennady truly was the breakout star of 2013 not only in the United States but internationally as well.”
The televised audience of 1,411,000 for Golovkin’s knockout of Stevens brought it to third place for 2013 in the year’s ratings for a cable boxing telecast.
Continued Loeffler, “We look forward to Gennady’s return to action on FEBRUARY 1 and another outstanding year as he continues to pursue the biggest challenges.”
Golovkin will kick off his 2014 schedule with his tenth title defense against top rated challenger Osumanu Adama, who has never been stopped, in his return to Monte Carlo on February 1. “GGG” has stopped fifteen opponents in a row and his knockout ratio (89.29%) ranks as the highest among all active world champions and the highest in the history of the middleweight division.
