Someone’s 0 will have to go when Gervonta Davis and Mario Barrios contest a secondary WBA world title on Saturday night.
130lbs and 135lbs champion, Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) steps up in weight to challenge undefeated Texan, Barrios in Atlanta for his WBA ‘Regular’ crown.
‘Tank’, undefeated in 24 fights has only been the distance once, last seen scoring a showreel knockout of Leo Santa Cruz in October which was awarded as 2020 knockout of the year by the coveted Ring Magazine.
The question is whether his power will carry up to Super Lightweight having campaigned the majority of his career 10 pounds lighter other than when he claimed the WBA ‘Regular’ Lightweight title against Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2019.
Barrios (26-0, 17 KOs) blasted out Ryan Karl in six rounds on the undercard of his foe’s win over Santa Cruz in San Antonio, but despite being the natural 140 pounder, heads in as the betting underdog.
Josh Taylor is the undisputed Super Lightweight champion, holding all four belts and the Ring Magazine title and would be a natural future target for the victor, although the Scot told the media on Tuesday that he does not consider the winner as a world champion.
