Host to a new wave of world-class fighters, Canada has become a hotbed of boxing talent and today, Golden Boy Promotions is pleased to announce the signing of their first Canadian-born boxer, unbeaten junior middleweight prospect Mikael Zewski (4-0, 3 KO’s).
“This is an exciting day in the history of Golden Boy Promotions as we are pleased to welcome Mikael Zewski, our first Canadian boxer, to the team,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “With packed arenas and some of the game’s most exciting fighters emerging from around the country, the Canadian boxing market is exploding. We believe we have one of those exciting fighters in Mikael and we’re expecting big things from him in the coming years.”
“First, I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions for giving me this huge opportunity,” said Zewski. “Today is the most exciting day of my career so far and it means so much to me to sign with Oscar de la Hoya’s company because he has always been a role model to me. Plus, I’m the only Canadian fighter on their team and I can’t wait to fight and show everybody what I can do. I know I have a bright future in front of me with Golden Boy.”
A native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, the 21-year-old Zewski first came to the attention of the boxing world during a stellar amateur career that saw him compile a 138-29 record, including a win over Cuban star Carlos Suarez Banteaux. Zewski, who is managed by Cameron Dunkin, is a four-time Canadian National Champion and counts among his accolades a Silver Medal at the 2004 Youth Pan Am Championships, as well as a fifth place finish in the 2009 Senior World Championships.
Trained by his father Jean, Zewski made his professional debut on February 27, 2010, stopping Kevin Kibler in three rounds in Augusta, Georgia. After two victories over Moses Alvizo (TKO2) and Alex DeLeon (W4) respectively, he made a triumphant return to Quebec on May 28, when he stopped 35-fight veteran John Hoffman in a single round at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City.
Now ready to thrill fans on both sides of the border and around the world, Zewski will return to action later this year for his first bout with Golden Boy Promotions on a date and against opponent to be announced shortly.
