Golovkin vs. Macklin –
- Gennady Golovkin: 159
- Matthew Macklin: 159
Golovkin defends his WBA Middleweight belt against tough Matthew Macklin of the UK. Mackin 29-4 (20 KOs) is gunning for the belt for the third time. In his first attempt, he lost a very disputed decision to Felix Sturm. His 2nd attempt was a game challenge of Sergio Martinez, where he was stopped in the 11th round. Golovkin, the highly-regarded beltholder, is taking on the toughest fighter in his career and looks to keep shining as he has been for the past couple years. A red-hot fighter, it has been 5 years since anyone has even lasted the distance with Golovkin, 26-0 (23 KOs). This is already Golovkin’s third appearance in the ring in 2013. Both fighters are 31 and appeared to be in fine fighting trim for Saturday’s encounter.
The rest of the televised card is rounded out by a pair of interesting bouts. Unbeaten super middleweights Brandon Gonzalez, 17-0 (10 KOs) and 6’4″ South African Thomas Oosthuizen, 21-0-1 (13 KOs) meet in a 10-tounder. The winner positions himself for big things in the hot 168-pound division. Also, elongated 6’4″ Willie Nelson, 20-1-1 (12 KOs), a streaking junior middleweight, takes on Argentine Luciano Cuello, 32-2 (16 KOs). Wilson is coming off decision wins over unbeaten fighters Yudel Jhonson and John Jackson and his most recent performance–a first-round blastout of Michael Medina.
