Guerrero – “I am devastated”
Due to an injury to his left shoulder and arm sustained yesterday afternoon during sparring, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has been forced to withdraw from his Saturday, August 27 WBA Super Lightweight World Title challenge against Marcos “El Chino” Maidana that was to be televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark. The entire card, which was set to take place at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., has been cancelled including the co-featured bout between undefeated heavyweight star Seth Mitchell and Mike Mollo.
Guerrero is currently on his way to receive an MRI to determine the severity of the injury and how long he will be away from the ring. The injury is a difficult setback for team Guerrero as the fight was just over a week away.
“I’m devastated because I worked my whole life for the opportunity to be a main event on HBO. It’s a major blow to my team and family, but I’ll continue to keep strong in my faith in Jesus Christ. To all my fans, I’ll be back and I know God has plans for me to perform in the future.”
Marcos Maidana offers his sympathy, but is eager to schedule another fight as soon as possible.
“I am very disappointed to hear that Guerrero was injured, especially at this stage of training camp. I hope he recovers soon, but I also want to get an opponent to replace him because I’ve been working really hard for about 12 weeks and I need to fight. I’ll face whoever they put in front of me next.”
Further information on Guerrero’s injury and a possible rescheduling of Maidana vs. Guerrero will be made soon.
Golden Boy Promotions wishes Robert Guerrero well, hopes he recovers quickly and that his return to the ring is speedy.
