Guerrero vs. Maidana Fight Canceled
The upcoming Robert Guerrero vs. Marcos Maidana fight has been canceled. Guerrero has suffered an injury during training, hurting his left shoulder, and leading to the cancellation of the bout. Guerrero vs. Maidana was set to be shown on HBO on August 27th, and was a hometown fight for Guerrero, in San Jose, CA. It was also a very intriguing contest with big implications for the division.
Richard Schaefer has already come out and said that the fight can hopefully be rescheduled for a later date. Maidana though, for his part, wants to get in the ring on the 27th and fight as planned.
Maidana released a statement saying:
“I’ve told Golden Boy Promotions that I’m willing to fight on Aug. 27 whoever they put in front of me. My team and I made a huge effort by having a 12-week training camp and we don’t wanna throw that away. Luckily, GBP is trying to get me an opponent and save the show. Let’s see if anyone dares to face me on Aug. 27. I am 100% ready to fight. I wish good luck to Guerrero but I’m in fighting mode at this time. I need to get in the ring. I trust GBP would get me the fight.”
Maidana’s statement does not appear to be entirely accurate however, as Schaefer has said that they have canceled the entire card as a result.
Not only is it a terrible blow to fight fans who were eagerly anticipating the fight, it’s a bad blow for Guerrero, who had been building some real momentum with his career after coming back from extended layoffs centered around his wife’s battle with leukemia.
It’s also funny timing, considering that training camp notes for Gurerrero were released just yesterday, and everything was as good as could be.
Guerrero will be going in for an MRI on the injured shoulder later this afternoon. Keep on checking back in for more breaking boxing news and updates.
