World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Emeritus and The Ring Magazine middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez celebrates his 36th birthday today.
It’s amazing to think that the late bloomer is just breaking out and coming into his own over the past few years, but yet is at an age when most other boxers begin falling off the map, if they haven’t already. Maybe Martinez will have another 10 years of fighting at the top levels of the game, like another late blooming middleweight champion, Bernard Hopkins.
Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) is preparing for his March 12th showdown against reigning World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) junior middleweight champion Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs) in the 12-round main event for the vacant WBC Diamond middleweight title, live on HBO World Championship Boxing (10:30 PM/ET start), from MGM Grand Arena at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
Everybody from the ProBoxing-Fans.com family is joining with Martinez’s promoter DiBella Entertainment to send our best to Martinez, our 2010 Fighter of the Year.
“I’m happy to be celebrating my 36th birthday while I’m in the prime of my boxing career,” Martinez said from his training camp in Oxnard, California. “I’d like to thank everyone for sending me birthday wishes and I’m really looking forward to my March 12th fight on HBO.”
