A superstar makes his 2015 debut when HBO Boxing’s Miguel Cotto vs. Daniel Geale telecast is seen Saturday, June 6, at 10:30 p.m. from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Returning to the ring for the first time in almost exactly a year, Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) defends his middleweight title against former champion Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round contest. Cotto, 34, is coming off a knockout victory over middleweight titleholder Sergio Martinez, which ended his opponent’s nearly five-year reign as middleweight champ.
The June 6 bout, Cotto’s first at Barclays Center, marks his 21st appearance on HBO. Since debuting on the network, he’s amassed titles in four different weight divisions, making him the first Puerto Rican to do so.
Australia’s Daniel Geale, 34, most recently scored a unanimous decision victory over fellow countryman Jarrod Fletcher last December. Known more for tactical precision than knockout power, he enjoyed a two-fight span as middleweight champ in 2012, and has challenged for two titles in the U.S. in recent years. The fight marks Geale’s third HBO appearance.
Cotto vs. Geale is slated for a somewhat controversial catchweight of 157 lbs. If he wins the fight, Cotto is likely slated for a fall match against Canelo Alvarez.
