Eddie Hearn believes that Chris Eubank Jr has no hope of dethroning Canelo Alvarez and insists the Brit will be aware of this.

Eubank Jr is reportedly a leading candidate to face undisputed super middleweight champion and former Hearn charge, Canelo on his usual September Mexican Independence date.

The Brentwood based promoter saw a huge all-British showdown between Eubank Jr and Conor Benn collapse after Benn failed two drug tests.

The Matchroom Chairman feels the Brighton man, whose last five fights have been at middleweight, including a rematch win over Liam Smith in September, will be well aware of the uphill battle ahead should he secure a lucrative bout with the four-weight world champion.

“A bit of a wild one isn’t it?” The 45-year-old told Boxing News.

“I mean listen if he can land it, the No Context Eddie Hearn meme of ‘how did you fluke that one?’ is going to be rolling out all over social media.

“But for me, I think a welterweight Conor Benn beats him.

“Eubank, although he’s game, he’s smart enough to know that he can’t compete with Canelo Alvarez at 168.

“But if the fortune’s there, he’s taking the fight.

“So good luck to him if he lands it.”

Hearn is pushing for his charge and WBA mandatory challenger, Edgar Berlanga to land a shot at Alvarez.

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican knocked out Padraig McCrory in February and Hearn insists it would be a bigger fight for the Mexican superstar, who defended his titles with a unanimous decision victory over compatriot Jaime Munguia in May.

“He’s a huge punching 168 pounder,” Hearn told Pro Boxing Fans.

“It’s Mexico against Puerto Rico and that does great numbers.

“Eubank against Canelo will do some numbers over here [in the UK] small at four o’clock in the morning, but it will lose a lot of interest and business in America, because with all due respect it’s just not a credible fight.

“So, I think Canelo will want to fight Berlanga.

“I think he knows that Berlanga will stand in front of him.

“It’s going to be interesting to see who the pick is.”
